The Special Olympics King Pins Bowling league [the rules] began in September, 1999. It was the idea of the late Jane Ross and her husband, Davis Ross, that there should be an organized bowling league for Special Olympics athletes.
The league was started with 6 athletes and two volunteers on the first day. Now the league has over 100 athletes and 60 volunteers. Bowling begins in September and the athletes bowl every Monday afternoon until the first week of May. During the year they have special events for the holidays and the season’s ends with an awards ceremony and a pizza party.
Many of the volunteers come from local high schools. Some of the volunteers have volunteered for several years and have formed special relationships with out athletes. The league also gets volunteers from the Raleigh Bartlett Civitan Club and the University of Memphis.
Bowling is also available through the Fitness Club.
